I used to marvel at people’s courage and will to run in a marathon. 42 km seemed like an impossible distance to run for me.
After sticking to 21km for quite a long time, I finally decided to stretch it further by running for a marathon at Penang Bridge International Marathon in Penang last year. Seriously, it took me a lot of courage to even think about doing it. In fact, I still couldn’t believe I actually did it.
I since then declared myself a marathoner. But then, I later decided that may be running for a single marathon doesn’t really make me a marathoner. So I challenged myself to a 2nd one. This time at Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon, one of my favorite marathon events in the country.
Somehow this time, it wasn’t easy for me. I was probably underprepared. 42km suddenly felt so long I have to admit that there were times when I felt like quitting. In fact, I really thought I have had enough when I reached the 21KM mark.
The main challenges this time were sleepiness and the scorching sun. Seriously, running under the scorching sun is no fun.
My target was to reach the 35KM mark and I’d let myself walk for the rest of the race.
Somehow when I reached the mark, I suddenly got my mojo back so I used every ounce of energy that I still had left to run all the way to the finish line.
And I did it. My 2nd marathon. Not the best of time, but within the cut off time as targeted.
I was too tired to celebrate but deep inside I was overjoyed.
Will there be another Full marathon for me? I am still tired and sore all over. All the torturing and suffering that I went through at the run are still fresh in my mind so the answer is no.
For now. 😛
