Caving at Gua Tempurung

Perak seems to be a state of so much interest to me of late ever since I went to Taiping and later Lenggong and finally Ipoh where I discovered so many amazing things whose existence I had had no idea of before.

I had long heard about rafting and caving activities in Perak but I didn’t really give them a serious thought probably because I knew I was going to be here in the Malaysian peninsular for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong long time. LOL.

The opportunity of going there seemed to have found its way over to me when I received a message from a friend asking if I was interested in joining him and some other friends to do rafting and caving in Kampar, Perak.

He actually found a good deal at groupon.my which is something of a craze among Malaysians since recently. Without giving much thought, I gave him a big YES.

With all the technologies that we have nowadays, it wasn’t hard to find Gopeng. One of the rafting staffs was there waiting for us just after we made it past the Gopeng toll plaza. I could not believe my ears when he first opened a conversation with me in Dusun. I mean, they really are all over nowadays, aren’t they? 😀  Continue reading

Hunting for Barong Tagalog at Tutuban Mall, Manila

One of the things that I did in Manila when I went there earlier this year was to find Barong Tagalog, the Filipino’s formal costume for men. It was actually a colleague of mine who asked if I could buy a pair of it for him and I readily agreed thinking that I was going to spend 5 days in Manila. When you are spending that long in a city like Manila, anything that creates a little bit of activity is welcome especially when it involves something like shopping.

I actually received a few suggestions on twitter and facebook on where to find Barong Tagalog in Manila. Quite most of them had suggested that I go to Tutuban Mall to find the most of choice. Located quiet nearby to the Divasoria market which is infamous for its notorious pick-pockets, I didn’t go there without much risk especially when I had the ladies tagging along behind me. Finally a Marathoner

So, I finally did it. After sticking to HM for 4 damn years, I finally did something that I thought I could or would never do. I really thought running for 21KM was already crazy enough so I thought I would never go crazier by doubling that distance and saying to myself that I’m ready to do it.

Somehow after doing 21KMs for quite so many times, I suddenly felt like the thrill was no longer there. You know, it’s like you already know that you can do it so the excitement of doing it again has almost if not completely disappeared. When that happened to me, I knew I had to for a longer distance or else I’d end up getting bored and hanging my shoes for good. I needed a bigger challenge to keep the excitement going.  Continue reading

Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan

I had always believed that Teluk Chempedak was one of the most beautiful beaches on the mainland of Malaysia. The picture memory that I had of its sandy beach and all the stones with beautiful formations kept haunting me with a strong urge to come back to Teluk Chempedak for them.

When I chanced upon a return to Kuantan, I knew I had to go there came rain or shine. Being one of the top beach destinations on the East coast of the Malaysian peninsular, there was no way it could shut itself entirely from the siren song of commercialization. Teluk Chempedak has indeed changed a lot from the last time I remembered it. Continue reading

Visiting the Old School

It had been 17 years since my last good bye to MRSM Kuantan, the boarding school that I attended for 2 years, a school that had literally shaped me into how I am today (ehem!). The school means so much to me personally may be because I remember how hard it was for me in the beginning to deal with the fact that I was thousands miles away from my family – something that I had never done in my entire life before.

Everything turned into a slow motion as I pulled through the gate and took a glimpse of the school that looked so distant in my aging memory and yet so visually familiar. I remember how I was dropped off by the taxi from the airport and for a moment I was just standing there in front of the gate and amazed by the sizes of the buildings in red. It took me quite a moment to accept the fact that those massive buildings were the buildings of my new school. Continue reading
